M1 Carbine, National Postal Meter

National Postal Meter, and their subsequent name changes have given rise to several carbine myths.  Understanding this timeline will clear up the myths.

National Postal Meter changed its name to Commercial Controls in early 1945.  Soon after that, the company again changed its name to Rochester Defense Corporation.  Rochester Defense was acquired by Fredan Corporation in ??.  Fredan was subsequently acquired by Singer Sewing Machine in 196??

There were a small number of carbines made by this firm and marked with the Commercial Controls name.  No carbines were made by or marked with the Rochester Defense, Fredan or Singer names.  Singer (totally unrelated to its 20 year later purchase of Nat'l Postal Meter) did subcontract receivers to some of the prime contractors.  These were denoted by a B on the receiver bevel, but not by the name Singer.
